Location

Nestled against the Rocky Mountains in southeast Idaho, Island Park is the perfect place to experience springtime. Beautiful wildflowers emerge as soon as the snow recedes. Trout spawn in the tributaries of rivers and streams. Henry’s Lake trophy spawners can be viewed up close and personal as they leap the fish ladder at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Hatchery on Hwy. 87.

Spring is also a perfect time for birdwatchers to see hundreds of mountain bluebirds — Idaho’s state bird — returning flocks of geese and songbirds, and nesting bald eagles.

There is often enough snow in some areas of Island Park for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing until the end of April. But it won’t feel like winter outside. Warm days will have you riding or skiing in your shirtsleeves, so bring plenty of sunscreen. It is possible in spring to ski or snowmobile in the morning and hop on a mountain bike or ATV in the afternoon!

Yellowstone National Park’s West Entrance, just 14 miles from the north end of Island Park, opens to wheeled vehicles on Friday, April 20. Visit the park before the summer crowds arrive and see newborn bison calves, grizzly and black bears, elk and other larger mammals, and hundreds of bird species. Geysers and other thermal features are at their best now due to extra water
from spring run-off.

Island Park is a great base for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National
Park trips, with its slower pace and its many lodging choices, from motels and lodges to cozy vacation cabin rentals.
